Sites Galore

Bizarre or Disturbing

Bonsai Kitten -- This is the definitive site on the art of creating bonsai kittens.

The Naked News -- You've got to see it to believe it.

Clean Truth or Dare -- This game is only entertaining if you are under eight.

The Jesus Dance -- Polka Pigs, eat your hearts out! (Be sure your speakers are on.)

The Evil of Pippi Longstocking -- First it was Pokemon, then Harry Potter, and now Pippi.

Swedish Hat Song -- This is so weird that it cannot be put into words. (Be sure your speakers are on.)

catenema.com -- Really great stories. Be sure to read I gave my cat an enema!

Fun

The Scoop on Poop -- Why do birds poop more on white cars?

Where's George? -- Find out where your dollars go after you spend them. There's also a Canadian version. (If you find a duck, go here.)

Joan Stark's ASCII Art Gallery -- Peruse the gallery and learn to make your own works of art. This goes way beyond simple emoticons.

The Kitty Litter Cam -- If you're lucky or persistent, you just might catch a cat shitting.

The Leonard Nimoy Should Eat More Salsa Foundation -- Well, shouldn't he?

The Centre for the Easily Amused -- This is a good place to go when you are bored.

Fark -- Fark is a community dedicated to finding, sharing and discussing everything interesting, weird or disturbing on the Internet.

Urban Legends Reference Pages -- This site is amazingly comprehensive and informative. One can spend hours reading about various urban legends. It also includes a useful section that identifies e-mail hoaxes.

Nostalgia

Yesterdayland -- From music to toys to arcade games, this site features tons of information and memories. But the best part is its comprehensive database of Saturday morning children's programs.

TVparty! -- This site is a wonderful complement to Yesterdayland's TV database. Although the entries are generally not as thorough, there are more of them, and they do provide additional information. Don't miss the reconstructed television schedule of Saturday morning programming from 1966 to 1988. (I was even able to find an entry for Muggsy, a program that I and probably only a handful of people remember, in their 1976 TV schedule.)

Lileks -- See just how disturbing the past really was. Be sure to check out The Gallery of Regrettable Food. The site also includes lots of adorable dog and baby pictures.

All Your Base are Belong to us -- See how a mistranslated 1980's videogame is changing the world. Background info can be found here. (Be sure your speakers are on.)

Site Building

Webmonkey -- Just about everything you could possibly want to know about authoring webpages can be found here. I believe it to be the most comprehensive such site on the internet. It also includes many excellent tutorials and resources.

The Call for Help Web Workshop -- Accompanying Silicon Ali's weekly televised webbuilding workshop on TechTV's Call for Help, this site contains all the lessons in chronological order. Taken as a whole, this is an excellent course for beginners.

BigNoseBird.Com -- Once you've mastered the basics of web design, go here to learn the advanced stuff.

Anfy Team Homepage -- Want some great visual effects for your site? Here you'll find some amazing free java applets.

WebFX -- Easily apply special effects and animation to your pictures.

Image Crunchers -- Remove extraneous data from your pics, so they take up less space. I use this on every picture I post to the web or e-mail.

BLOGGER -- Create and post to a weblog easily and without knowing HTML.

Under Construction -- Choose from an assortment of interesting "under construction" icons, find out what each says about its user, and learn why not to use one.

Travel

Lonely Planet -- Publishers of the popular travel guidbooks offer additional information on their website.

Fielding's DangerFinder -- The problem with most travel guides, including Lonely Planet, is that they never cover extremely dangerous regions or countries on the pretext that travelers should not go to such places. Unfortunately, people occasionally do wind up in bad parts of the world, and good information can be life-saving. The World's Most Dangerous Places is a book specializing in just such information, and this is its associated website. (The US is one of the countries on the list.)

How to Get the Best Airfare Deals Online -- Although a little old, this article published by The Motley Fool is a great resource for anyone trying to get the best price for airline tickets online.

Useful

RealAge -- Find out your statistical age and how to make it younger.

The Official US Time -- Straight from the Atomic Clock, and accurate to within a fraction of a second, this site will remember your time zone and even display the current location of daylight on a world map. (Also check out the Humanclock.)

Stump the Bookseller -- Want to find a book that you loved as a child but don't remember the title or even very much of the story? Post the info here. Usually the mystery is solved in about a week. Unfortunately, the service is no longer free; there is now a $2 fee for posting a stumper. But it's still a great service.

Letterpost.com -- Amazingly some people still don't have e-mail! Use this site to correspond with them. Type in your message just as you would an e-mail address, and for just one dollar your letter will be printed and mailed to anywhere in the world.

Phonespell -- Find out what your phone number spells.

Best Book Buys -- If you buy books online, and price is important, you need this site. It has access to the prices of all the books at over 25 of the major reputable online booksellers, including Amazon. Just enter the book you want to buy, and it will tell you where to get it the cheapest. The prices even include shipping costs.

Ask Dr. Weil -- Find alternative solutions to your medical problems.

Epicurious -- Need a recipe? Go here. Epicurious has a database of over 13,000 recipes -- all free!
